Brief summary of titration.

Brief summary of the main points in carrying out titration.

General:
Washing of the burette and pipette with tap water, distilled water and followed by the respective solutions.
If the questions state "titrate Q with P", you should fill your burette with solution P.
MAKE SURE YOU USED THE CORRECT CHEMICALS!!

Pipette:
  1. When using the pipette to suck up the solution, the tip must be submerged into the solution or else air will enter the pipette.
  2. When adjusting the solution level of the pipette using the pipette pump, make sure the tip of the pipette is not submerged in the solution.
  3. When you are trying to get the last drop of solution from the pipette, tap gently the tip on the bottom of the conical flask.

Burette:
  1. When filling up the burette with chemicals, place the burette on a stool to ensure accuracy of the readings.
  2. When adjusting the solution level in the burette, remove the funnel from the burette.
  3. Make sure the burette tip is filled with solution and no bubbles is in the burette.

Titration:
  1. Swirl the conical flask constantly when doing titration.
  2. Stop titration when the difference in the 2 readings (volume of solution used) is within 0.1
  3. Take the average between the 2 readings to use in the subsequent calculation.

Results:
Present your results in the following format

All values in the table had to be in 1 decimal place.
In this case the solution in the burette is chemical P, if the chemical used is different, please edit the last row.

Calculation section:
  • Practical 10 worksheet: Identify acid and calculate concentration
  • Practical 11 worksheet: Calculate percentage purity
  • To make sure that you have no problems with calculation, try to solve both practical worksheets again.
  • Revision of VA worksheets is highly recommended.

Others:
  • Please make sure your bench is tidy and arrange the chemicals and apparatus in order.
  • Dropper and glass rod should be placed in a beaker filled with distilled water.
  • You should not use more than 3 drops of indicator.
  • Make sure you have good time management.
